ENGAGE All of level 3 AND: Predicts students’ questions and plans for individual learning needs. All of level 1 AND: Uses students’ background knowledge and interest to motivate the task with real-life examples. Uses some strategies to uncover student thinking but makes minimal connections to prior knowledge.
EXPLORE All of level 3 AND: Offers open-ended tasks with multiple solution paths; students prepare evidence and contribute to discussions. All of level 1 AND: Allows hands-on exploration and student decision-making; supports collaboration with multiple strategies and questions. Task is one-dimensional with no variety; teacher fully prescribes steps; little support for engagement.
